This is a tried-and-true brownie recipe that’s as simple as baking with a pre-made mix — but tastes so much better.
I’ve tried a variety of different brownie recipes and, as a result, found myself picking and pulling ingredients from each one to perfect my own batch. Basically, this is a product of multiple trials and errors, but I assure you the experimentation was worth it.
If you’re not a huge dark chocolate fan, don’t run away just yet. I use melted semi-sweet chocolate chips (or melted dark chocolate bars) to balance the sugar, since I use 1 cup of sugar. Sweet is good, but anything too sweet can overpower the rich flavour.
The other ingredients are as straightforward as you can get when it comes to simple baking. So if you’re craving a simple yet classic brownie recipe, grab a mixing bowl and a few ingredients to start enjoying this homemade delight.

Prep time | 15 mins.
Cook time | 25-30 mins.
Yields | 16 brownies
INGREDIENTS
- 1/2 cup butter, melted
- 2 eggs
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1/3 cup dark chocolate, melted (I use 6 Lindt, 70% dark chocolate balls — they have gooey chocolate in the middle that makes the brownies extra soft and chewy)
- 1/4 tsp baking powder
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1 cup flour
INSTRUCTIONS
- Preheat the oven to 350°F.
- Melt the butter (either on the stove or in the microwave) and mix butter in a large bowl with the sugar, eggs and vanilla extract.
- Add your chocolate, baking powder, salt and flour to the bowl and mix until well combined.
- Butter the base and halfway up the sides of your baking dish. I used an 9×9 dish.
- Bake for 25-30 minutes. At 25 minutes, pull the dish out and stick a toothpick in and out of the batter. If the toothpick is clean, the brownies are ready. If it comes back with residual brownie mix on it, return to the oven for 5 minutes.
- Let cool before cutting into your brownies. Enjoy with a cold glass of milk!
